When the Italian peninsula was reunified in the 19th century, the Florentine dialect was adopted by the Italian state as the national language. Modern Italian is based on the language of Dante, Bocaccio, Petrarch, and Machiavelli. It is, unsurprisingly, the closest of the major Romance languages to Latin.
