Grammar Appendix

The verb "to have": "I have, You have, He has, etc."

In Turkish, there is no verb "to have". Instead, Turks use the word var, which means "exists". To say that "I have a car," you literally say "my car exists".


In the Present Tense

Arabam var. - I have a car. (literally, "my car exists")
Kız kardeşin var. - You have a sister. (literally, "your sister exists")


Past Tense

Arabam vardı. - I had a car.
Kız kardeşin vardı. - You had a sister.


Future Tense

Arabam olacak. - I will have a car.
Kız kardeşin olacak. You will have a sister.
